An antiquated DAC or an affordable recent one?

An inexpensive digital to analog converter is next on the purchase list. Should I opt for something new, (such as a Musical Fidelity V-Dac or Cambridge Audio Dac-Magic) or retro (like a Theta Chroma 396, Ps Audio Superlink or Adcom 600)? It is now, sadly, only listening via Sennheiser Hd 580 and Creek OBH-11, with a cheap Cd player. Rock and pop are the musical tastes.

Since the technology for DAC's changes fairly quickly, I think you would do better getting something 3 years old or newer. I don't know what your budget is, but based on what you're describing above, you may like the Benchmark DAC1 with the built-in Headphone Amplifier. It's a great DAC and the headphone amp section should be a huge improvement over the Creek. One just sold for $600 here.

I would personally buy used when it comes to a DAC, people upgrade all the time, why should you take the hit on depreciation.

Let me make another recommendation for you; since you don't have speakers right now, consider a set of Audioengine A5 Powered Speakers, they're $350 and they sound fantastic in a bedroom or hooked up to your Computer (iTunes), ipod, or CD Player as your source.
