Living Room SET System
This is my first experiment with a low-powered SET system. I put this system together to fill in behind my reference audio system that now resides in a dedicated listening room that was constructed during 2007.

The relocation of the reference system left our living room without music, so I decided to put together a small scale system designed to be unobtrusive and not interfere with the function of the room as a traditional living room. A low-powered SET system seemed like a logical way to go. It satisfies my drive for extreme audio but still allows our living room to look and function first and foremost like a living room. The dimensions of the room are 19'2" x 15'2" x 8'2".

I originally designed this system with an eye towards the reproduction of classical chamber music, vocals and small group jazz; however, the system has gradually grown to be much more versatile. The 10wpc 300B SETs provide ample power to drive the Living Voice speakers to satisfying, room-saturating decibel levels. The sound is very dynamic and propulsive in a way that is very atypical for this style of audio system. I should also note that the system can reproduce nearly the full audible frequency spectrum, with bass response that is flat down to 30Hz.

With the arrival of the Wave Kinetics NVS turntable in my reference audio system, I retired the Grand Prix Audio Monaco and Dynavector tonearm to this smaller system. When paired with the Ortofon MC A90 cartridge and Nagra phono stage this is now a first class analog front end. The digital source is the outstanding AMR CD-77, also retired from my reference system.

Hi Stephen -

I'm glad your speaker project was a success. Even though you describe yourself as a GSTDIFY'er as opposed to a DIY'er, I admire your ability to carry off a project like this one. I don't have some of the rudimentary skills - like soldering, for example - to undertake this sort of a project, and I'm glad there are guys out there like Mike Morrow to do it for me...

It's also good to hear that you're getting a good vibe from your wife with respect to the look of the new speakers. So far, so good!

Based on your initial impressions, it sounds like you might be wanting a bit for improved bass performance. As you suggested, your bass will likely improve once you upgrade your amplifier, but I suppose it is possible the AN speakers - and their close cousins that I will soon be acquiring - simply lack the ability to match the bass performance of your prior reference - the Gershman Cameleons, that is. Then again, at 89dB rated sensitivity, I gather that those Gershmans would have been altogether incompatible with the new SET direction of your system. As you know, bass performance is often the Achilles' heel of an SET system.

I'm sure you are right about these speakers falling short of the performance of my reference speakers at the frequency extremes. In fact, that's a compromise I accepted from the moment I began to assemble this SET system. My reference system is designed to make no compromise around achieving truly full range frequency response and reproducing the scale, weight and dynamics of a symphony orchestra. This requires a lot of horsepower, big cabinets and a lot of drivers.

While my reference system also does an extremely good job with small scale music and midrange tone/color, my objective for this SET system to achieve something that might even surpass the reference system in this area. I expect to use this SET system for reproducing just the sort of music you suggested - small group acoustic jazz, chamber music and vocals. Once the listening progresses to Mahler and Bruckner, that will require relocation to another room...

On the topic of BHP and tranny dampening, perhaps you saw the post this weekend to the Promitheus thread over at the Circle. One of the guys over there received his signature TVC last week, and he posted a bunch of pictures of the component, including some tranny dampening modifications that he implemented.

Lastly, Stephen, I do appreciate your comments regarding my ramblings here on this site. However, you might be disappointed to learn that my wage-earning vocation is public accounting. (I'm an odd duck.)

I will be interested on your further reflections as you get some additional listening experience and, of course, when you add the new amplifiers to the mix. And I do hope that you are able to resolve the hum issue with your analog front end. Do you have any expectations as to the timing of Nicholas building your 300B transformer-coupled SETs?

I'll keep you posted as the rest of my system comes together. I am hoping to have my amplifiers within the next week or so, and then I suppose I will move on speakers and cables soon thereafter...

Here's to enjoying Bavarian Weissbier in person with you at some point,

- Bob
