So, stephen, how did you make out with your speaker project? ... Cincy_bob
09-23-07: Easternenigma Bob,
My speakers are now operational. I spent all day yesterday attaching stuffing (attenuate high frequencies in the cabinet and reduce standing waves), drilling for drivers, wiring and then closing it all up. I'm more of a Get-Someone-To-Do-It-For-You (GSTDIFY - you read it here first) person than DIY, so a couple of theraputic Bavarian wheat beers were called for to alleviate stress.
The stain looks a bit different from what I expected it to look like (Minwax Sequoia); it actually looks like a slightly light brown walnut. With the black drivers, the speakers have a bit of the Tannoy Westminster classic English look to them, which I find appealing. Initial WAF assessment was only slightly negative to neutral, which may turn to somewhat positive in the fullness of time based upon experience.
They obviously need some break-in before a fair assessment can be made. My last speakers used a mass-loaded transmission line (MLTL) and I thought the designer did a superb job in getting the bass 'right.' (gershmanacoustics.com/index.html..., although the Cameleon model is no longer made.) I've had the two front AN drivers in small open baffles (OB) while my cabinets were being made, so they should be more or less broken in.
Bearing in mind all of this and that the Morrows look to be slightly different (different bass port, my upper drivers don't have the copper phase plug, etc.), I first noticed a general improvement in low level detail retrieval over the OBs, which surprised me. Since I had added the speaker binding posts to the signal path, if anything I would expect slightly less detail. I attribute this to superior impedance matching, as my interim Sonic Impact II prefers 4 ohms over 8 ohms. The OBs were 8 ohm due to the single drivers, but I have my speakers currently configured for 4 ohms.
I thought the bass was okay but not exceptional. I prefer the bass of my old MLTL speakers in terms of tone and taughtness. Bearing in mind that we're talking in the vicinity of 40Hz, I think the speakers have acceptable bass for acoustic, jazz and small classical works, and probably for those nostalgia sessions with the old rock albums. In fairness, the Sonic Impact II has been observed to be a little shy in the bass, so the speakers may be better here than I observe.
The highs are slightly rolled off, which is to be expected, I suppose, from most full-rangers. However, there's enough there that I found this didn't really bother me other than to note its existence.
I also noted, along with the great detail retrieval, a substantial increase in stage depth on some recordings, the best I've yet experienced. Lead sax was louder and more forward, drummers were slightly fainter and farther back. Also, the dynamic range seemed to expand nicely. I found I was noticing percussion rhythms more distinctly (Art Blakey), and a greater sense of the recording space or 'being there.' (E.g. Jazz At The Pawnshop.)
While much of this may be a function of the enhanced impedance matching, I still wouldn't be hearing it if the speakers couldn't deliver. While your Morrow speakers will likely pale somewhat to those in your main rig at the frequency extremes - I could be wrong, though -, I think they may actually be as good or better in terms of midrange detail. I have no doubt that your upcoming Morrow Amps will greatly surpass my T-amps, and with the TVC pre I'd wager you (and, by default, 'we') have thought this out correctly and have the basis for an excellent system.
Yes, this will be very revealling of your upstream source(s).
Congratulations on the BHP success. (I.e. transformer damping, not stock appreciation due to a major mineral find.) I've asked Nicholas before about it and he had indicated that he was thinking about it for the Signatures. (I think - I'll have to check the mails to be certain.) I'll ask him about it again.
Finally, I would also like to add how much I enjoy your posts, both for their content AND for the very articulate writing, which I find to be a rarity online these days. You have me playing "Guess Bob's Career Profession" whenever I read them. I speculate that you're not a charter member of the Cincy Septic Guardians Guild.
Cheers,
Stephen Easternenigma (System | Answers | This Thread)
