The Never Ending Journey.....
One spring day years ago I wondered into a music store looking for the latest and greatest album at the time. Instead, I was treated to a demonstration of Klipsch K Horns powered by a pair of Mcintosh tube amps playing a piano conerto followed by a musician playing the same piece live. That, my friends is where the journey began.

The latest...

This has been a pretty large project getting to what you see here. I built my house around the sound room! I also did all the finish work in the sound room myself. The next one will be much easier! It's cost a fair amount of money and gray hair too but I feel it's cheaper than the professional therapy that I would have needed without the vast improvements the sound room has contributed.

If you ever come past Boise, stop by and we'll have a Koolaid and listen to the latest Marcel Marceau record.

Mike, very, very, nice! Great work! I'm waiting for my Supratek Chenin to arrive, Rives did my room as well, and, my best friend lives near Boise in Eagle. I get out there every so often. I would love to see and hear your setup! What PC do you have on your Syrah?

If you ever find your way near Philadelphia, you are welcome to my home for some beverages and music as well...

Again, congrats! You have much to be proud of.

Eat excrement and demise, maternal fornicator! I hate you! No human being should own such a system! Such systems should be limited to the pages of glossy journals as the centerfold, or to hotel rooms at national trade shows. This system is the proverbial carrot on the end of the stick always beyond the reach of the drooling audiophile. Now I have to go and listen to some music to forget about your brash display of bravado. I don't think I'll ever look at my system quite the same way again. Yer' a bum Vetterone! Oh, and Pink Floyd sucks too!

Eat your hearts out guys. I've had the pleasure of listening to Steve's system in this room. I'll never forget how emotional I was with the double whammy of killer looks and great sound the first time I experienced it. Steve is probably too humble to tell you that he built the room himself, not to mention the home it's in. The list of details left unmentioned is long. Dedicated lines, the room behind the equipment rack, the ceiling treatments, on and on and on. It's a wonderful thing when a plan comes together. Good job Steve!!

Now I'm really confused. Do I leave in the morning and drive to Bosie, or just start tearing down my house to build a full scale model of that room. I could live in there; I wouldn't need anything else, live happily everafter. Sure wish I hadn't just spent all that money on a new roof, plumbing, and heating system, seems like such a waste.
I'm off to the store for a new hammer, and some steel toed boots.
Enjoy,

Thanks for all the kind words...except for you Marco. Just kidding Marco, I think you gave me your highest praise. You say "bum" like its a bad thing. To be more bum like is one of my quests in life!
Dolphin, I have about $850 in material in all six wood columns. Rives called for hardwood facing so the best value here in Boise was knotty alder.(Warrenh-its safe, your picture is out of the Post Office now so come back out and see us!) I would have loved to use tiger wood but....$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Stehno, intense is a word I have heard to describe this room before, thanks.
Jond, chicks do seem to dig this room and so does my parole officer.( glad to be single if you had not figured that out yet) I do prefer to think it is my charm that gets them, should we say, comfortable?
Howard, good eye, that is cork on the floor. Rives wanted a Pergo type floor over concrete but I can't stand the hollow sound. I also can't believe that I could get a good anchor to the floor with my stands because Pergo is a floating system. I am very happy with the cork. Reflects like wood but much more comfortable on my feet. It also doesn't give my girl friend that nasty rug burn she used to get with the orange shag carpting I had in the old room.
Lugnut, great guy. Pat took most of the pictures for this post. If it weren't for Pat, I would never have gotten around to posting my system. Thanks for all the help!

Steve

Rest assured, Steve, my words reflect the very apex of praise from my
wee mind. With praise like mine, you don't need any insults! And me
calling you a 'bum' is kind of like a prolonged, erotic deep throated kiss,
were I a beautiful woman, followed by some good head and the kind of
explosive climax that fills your brain with a bright white light, leaving
you limp and sweaty and wanting to just sleep. But I'm not a beautiful
woman. I'm just an ordinary guy, and I'm not gonna even give you a
peck on the cheeck, much less stick my tongue down your throat, and
you can forget about gettin' any from me. I might shake your hand if I
met you. But I don't see myself coming to Iowa, or Kansas or anywhere
in those general nether regions of our great country any time soon. But
if I DID come to Nebraska, you could be sure I'd be knocking on your
door to partake in the Reverend Jim Jones elixir and hear music in your
cork-lined room, on your poxy chick-magnet system. If you happen to
find yourself in Seattle you can look me up and cash in on that hand
shake. I don't think I'll have any Kool Aid...there may be an old bottle of
Snapple in the back of the fridge from when my niece and nephew were
here though. So what I'm trying to say here, in a long-winded post of
epic proportions, utterly worthless in content, and completely ignoring
ol' William's advice regarding brevity being the soul of wit , is that
"bum" is all you'll be getting from me, so I'm happy that you
receive it in the true spirit of comradary, perverted lust, and deep seated
envy in which it was offered.

Your platonic pal and admirer of all things audioholic,

Marco

Just in case you have a difficult time reading between the lines Steve, that is certainly among the most beautiful and thoughtfully put together systems, outdone only by your design and construction of the room with the help of Rives. It is a pure and personal expression of audiophile art and I am glad you chose to share it here. Really...an inspiration.

Cheap sushi..., that's a toss-up, but yours is an excellent recommendation. the other being Toyoda Sushi on Lake City Way. For some really wonderful and unusual sushi, try I Love Sushi (one in Belevue and one on Lake Union). Not bad for a man from MO. You'll likely have to sell three houses in MO to buy a house in my neighborhood by the time you come back if this growth and inflation continues. It is really ridiculous!

Yes, Pat is building a great looking, rock solid stand for my equipment and I just picked up a four inch thick piece of Babinga wood for the top shelf that will hold the Teres and transport. Chris (from Teres) wants solid...Chris will get solid. I can hardly wait for the listening debut. I will post the updates soon.
Yes Dean, Pat would put a Whipple on everything if I let him.

As good as the Supratek is, the detail, speed and SMOOTHNESS with the new combination has me shaking my head in amazement. How about the Aesthetix Io with volume controls and the dual power supplies? Seems that to better the Supratek at any order of magnitude, that would be the way to go.

I went over last night for a listen expecting another critical listening session again selecting a cable or something. Not this time. Steve entertained me with music he knew I loved regardless of the quality of the recording. We listened to Neil Young's "On The Beach", Booker T. And The MG's "Green Onions" and Iron Butterfly's "Innagodadavida" along with some selct high res SACD's and Union Station live. This was the most fun I've ever had listening to music. The most thrilling part of this listening adventure was how great those lesser recording sounded. Folks, this is spooky good gear. The digital front end has me tempted to write that this form of media is on a par with a great analog source. I have felt that once the needle hits the groove that the sun, the moon and the stars will align. I still hope so and we will know soon as his Teres will be up and running before the end of this month. Did I mention how much fun I had last night??

It's a good thing for you that I'm too distant to drop by for real, because I'd probably never leave. Great room, great system, great friends and - I'm sure - great music. Well done.

Hi guys, thanks for the nice words!
I have to agree with Patrick, the sound I am getting right now has made all the hard work and $$$ worth it. I know there is more to be had with tweeking and cables, but right now I don't think about what needs to be improved anymore. The system is in harmony with the room and there seems to be nothing bothering me about the music now. I just have to stop staying up until two in the morning listening to music. Maybe I need to put my bed in the sound room? What would that do to my sound stage...Um.
To quote Uncle Larry "its a sick and I'm a happy guy"
Anyone visiting this neck of the woods, there are a couple of spare rooms you are welcome to use, but from what Pat says,Doug, you need to bring your own sheets.

Steve,
.
Congratulations on in great room and terrific choices made in equipment. Your system must just sing.
.
Does the Meitner pre significantly outshine the Supratek Syrah line stage ?
.
I have been giving thought to getting the new EMM SACD / DAC combination to replace my Electrocompaniet EMC-1up. Do How do you like the EMM set up now that it is fully broken in? What other CD players have you heard and how does the Meitner stack up against them.
.
The phono stage on my Supratek Cortese is stunning. I have heard amazing things about the latest iterations of Mick's phono stages and how they have improved significantly. I just ordered a Grange to replace my Cortese and have great expectations of how the phono stage will sound. Are you still contemplating getting a separate phono stage to replace your Syrah ?

.
Congrats / Rgds, Larry
.

Cello  (Threads | Answers | This Thread)

11-04-04: Vetterone
Ampster, thanks and you are so right, the right room lets you hear EVERYTHING in the system, right OR wrong! I have some of both.

Spencer, thank you too for the nice words. I hope you get where you want to be with your system sooner than it took me. It took me 25 years.

Larry, thanks again for the praise. I don't to start any fights here, but there is no comparison between the dcc2 pre and the Syrah. The pre in the Syrah is the hands down winner over the dcc2 pre. And let me say the pre in the dcc2 is VERY good. The Syrah is just smoother and somewhat fuller in sound. This just not my opinion. Lugnut has heard the same thing.
I have heard the EMC-1 CDP and while it is very nice, the EMM set up is SOOOOO much smoother and detailed at the same time. Really in another league. I have heard many upper end CDPs with the exception of DCS and Boulder. My CD sound is better than most vinyl systems. It takes a very well set up vinyl system to sound better. Ask Lugnut who is all vinyl. I would suggest that you save a bunch of money and buy a DAC6e for about half the price of a dcc2 and use your Supratek as the pre. You will have the best digital sound and save a bunch of money.
I am about to pull the trigger on ordering a Cortese since I like the Supratek magic. Do you think I should go all the way and get the Grange? I guess you must since you are ordering a Grange for yourself. Do you know the differences between the Grange and Cortese sound?

Vetterone  (System | Threads | Answers | This Thread)

Nice room Steve, I'm envious. It seems we have similar systems except for the Meitner and a few other minor details! I would love to hear this set-up, I'll bet Bobby P would as well. If you ever get a chance you might want to listen to the Stereovox if Allan hasn't told you already ;^) exceptional! Pricey but I really think you should hear them considering the thoughfulness you have put into your wonderful set-up. Your opinion would be of considerable value and if the Ridge Street are even close to as magical, I've gotta know.

Take Care

Will

ps I still owe you a Brazilian cd, I think!

Steve,
.
Thanks for sharing your ideas/ experience with the EMM products. I love my Electrocompaniet CDP, but I have been wanting to get my CD side as close to vinyl as is possible. It seems from all accounts that Ed's stuff is as good as it gets at this point. I like your idea of the DAC6e. Does that model also convert Red Book to DSD ?
.
My Cortese (older) is a knock out in the phono stage and I have been told that the new Cortese is far better now (quite recently) with some new designs that Mick and Kevin have come up with. The Grange is supposed to be yet another quantum leap up again.
.
I was debating on getting my Cortese upgraded to the latest design, but I did not want to part with it for a few months while waiting for the upgrade to be done. I thought it would be more efficient to jump all the way to the Grange and not go through the cost/time of another upgrade later on.
.
Send an email to me with a phone number and time / times when/where I can call and I can fill you in a good bit more detail if you would like.
.
Rdgs, Larry

Hi Will, come on out and we will fire things up any time you want. I would really like to hear the stereovox cables. Allan has tried his best to get me to buy a some but the $$$$$ and I am quite happy with the RSA's. I am afaid that for that kind of money, I would have to audition before I buy.
PS, good memory on the CD! Its been a few years since you said you would send one:)

Larry, the DAC6e does convert Redbook to DSD. The DACs in both EMM Labs units are supposed to do the same thing sonicly but that is a test for later. I have both units as I write this. I will do this comparison soon. One has to go! My number is 208-375-5958 if you would like to share your thoughts on the different Supratek preamps. I would enjoy that conversation.
