Albert Porter's System
Focal Grande Utopia EM in black finish

Analog music sources, Technics SP10 MK3 and Studer A810 Archival half + quarter track IEC and NAB.

Digital music source is Macintosh Mini, OCZ Solid State HD, Amarra Pro, Pure Music and Play software.

Allnic H3000 and L3000 pre and phono into a single pair of VTL 750.

Computer USB cable to Ayre is Purist Audio, all other cables are Purist Audio 25th Anniversary, plus Proteus Praesto and Purist 25th Anniversary AC.

The entire space (18' X 31') is acoustically treated with RPG panels and/or fiberglass over triple reinforced walls and ceiling. Floor is lamination beams over steel plates and two 5/8 epoxy floor. Above that floats 1.5" of concrete and half inch float for India multi color slate tiles.

All the reinforcement and acoustic treatment goes unnoticed, due to Whisper Wall rail system and fine textured acoustic cloth covering everything. In these photos (and often in person) it passes for painted sheetrock.

Room was designed by RBDG. The entire space was torn out to bare dirt floor and open studs nine years ago.

Thanks for looking.

I was over at Albert's place Tuesday and heard some of the finest sounds I've ever heard. Perhaps the finest, but aural memory is fickle. I'm going to say that I like the big Soundlabs a little more, and I suppose that's due to the seamless midband (I'm a midrange freak). Albert is working on that and knows it's the only real area where his old speakers "might" hold an edge--when they weren't broken. Obviously, on dynamics, power, more power, and ever more power, bandwidth, and maybe even imaging, the Dalis kick ass. I've heard the vinyl setup before, and its strengths are an almost total absence of vinyl noise. My listening preference is a little more forward, a little brighter than Albert's. Regardless, it's the most "natural" and the least "mechanical" I've ever heard. Tonal balance is a personal taste, kind of like which seats you choose at the concert. What really (literally and figuratively) blew me away was the R2R at 15IPS playing the Faron Young and "Toys in the Attic" safety masters. I can say without reservation that they were the most lifelike things I've ever heard. The only thing that has come close for me was direct to disk, but they don't do unlimited dynamics and bandwidth like these tapes do. Obviously, "Toys in the Attic" is a very "produced" album. You could hear the recording engineer fade from the instrumental tracks to the vocal tracks, apply compression, pan L2R and so on. BUT, it still sounded like I was in the studio while the band was playing, and that wouldn't have been possible without those monster assed speakers and the thousand+ watts on tap. You can play these tapes on this system at incredible levels without strain and without listener's fatigue. I've been in orchestras, concert bands, choirs, and huge marching bands. This system can almost do that kind of effortless power with unlimited bandwidth. I say almost because the Faron Young tape pushed the Air Tights to the wall. No problem, another set of VTL 750 are on the way to the rescue. Honestly, I wouldn't have noticed if Albert hadn't brought it to my attention. You could tell on the steel guitar line. You have to understand that this tape had ZERO compression and we were playing it at "Bob's Country Bunker" levels. Not only will the new amps help with power, it should help with the crossover region and maybe sweep away the last vestiges of the old republic (soundlabs). And he has a fully rebuilt (to the nines!) Ampex R2R on the way, and the electronics in the current deck he's using can't hold a candle to the rest of the system. It will be mind blowing, I'm sure. And a new Jade Platinum that looks to die for. Which leads me back to the vinyl. He played some 45rpm pop (he can fill us in) that nearly approached the dynamic realism of the tape. They say money can't buy you happiness. Bullshit! I was very happy when I left Tuesday night.
