I remember that you have the 312S and a while back we discussed the differences between it and the V12, the fixed headshell and dynamic VTF of the latter being the biggest differences. I've heard neither and I don't think you have tried the V12, but that would certainly be an interesting comparison. Incidentally, do you use the damping trough on your 312S with the Supreme? I used to use mine on the SME V but stopped when I decided I preferred it without any damping.
I agree with your comments on SME arms (and by extension, I would add SME tables). The precision with which their products are made is incredible. I like their tables very much but have not really done direct comparisons to others in my own system. I would very much like to compare the speed stability of the larger SME tables to that of a good direct drive table. The NVS or SP10 III would be interesting to compare to the SME 3012. Your Vibraplane would equal the effectiveness of the SME suspension towers I would think.
I find that when I adjust VTA on my SME V, the arm's vertical cylinder tower can get off-plum because the VTA screw is off-set from the tower's center axis and thus tilts the arm when turned. Then tightening the lock screws does not necessarily square the arm again, so this can be a bit frustrating. I use a tiny level to confirm that the top of the cartridge/headshell is level before tightening the lock screws. I think the design maximizes rigidity and so any threads are not part of the tower, but the adjustment is a bit finicky.
I would like to try the V12 arm on an arm pod because my table can not accommodate the longer arm.
Regarding the continuous wire, have you ever contemplated rewiring the arm externally to avoid the breaks? It would be messy, but it might sound better. I think this is one more advantage of the fixed headshell design having one less break.
I like my MInt and find it extremely precise and effective, but yes, the sighting is difficult with my aging eyes, especially with a cantilever under the cartridge body. That is one reason I'm considering the Uni-Protractor.
Keep up the experiments and sharing the results. Many of us on this forum appreciate your efforts.
