01-07-03: Johnnybgoode LS 3/5a mini-monitors. Rogers made the most famous version, but Spendor, Chartwell and Harbeth also made them to rigorous BBC specifications. They proved that you could get gorgeous sound with a reasonable facsimile of bass out of a little box. They were the basis of future generations of countless mini- monitor designs, as well as several major full-range systems which were basically mini-monitors coupled with bass bins, (e,g., B & W 801's). I bought mine almost 24 years ago and still love listening to music through them. Johnnybgoode (Threads | Answers | This Thread)

01-25-03: Johnnybgoode The Advent Loudspeaker, Original Version. The late Henry Kloss used the acoustic suspension system that he pioneered to produce flat, extended bass from a not-so-huge box. He also crossed over the tweeter at a relatively low frequency, lowering costs by eliminating the need for a midrange driver and improving the high-frequency dispersion of the system as a whole. Another cost-cutting measure was building a 10-inch woofer in a more readily available, less expensive 12-inch metal frame basket. Some regard this as the first widely available audiophile speaker. I view this product like the NAD 3020, making excellent sound affordable to many. Johnnybgoode (Threads | Answers | This Thread)
01-26-03: Johnnybgoode The AR Turntable, original version. The Linn Sondek LP12 is (deservedly) hailed many times on these pages as the unit that proved the importance of turntables, but Ed Villchur's AR was the original. His September 1963 paper "What the consumer should know about record players" was a milestone in its time, explaining acoustic feedback, motor types, wow and flutter, rumble, speed accuracy, and other key concepts in turntable performance. To me, one of the features of an audio legend is a pioneering design that helped define the direction of future components. Features shared by the AR, Linn and some Thorens models are two-piece platters that damp ringing when assembled, three point spring suspended sub-chasis to reduce acoustic feedback, and belt-drive motor clamped to the top plate to minimize motor vibration in the platter-arm system. These systems are more refined in the Thorens and probably best executed in the Linn. Admittedly, the original AR had a mediocre tonearm. However, I fitted a Grace 707 to a 30+ year old AR-XA that I picked up for a few bucks. While NOT a Linn-beater by any stretch, it is surprisingly musical, emotionally involving and enjoyable to listen to. Johnnybgoode (Threads | Answers | This Thread)

01-08-05: Johnnybgoode H. H. Scott tube integrated amplifiers. There were many models, some of which have been called the best selling tube integrated amplifiers of all time. They inspired the creation of subsequent units like the Dynaco integrateds. They were far ahead of their time with pioneering features such as a combined center channel preamp output that can be used with an additional power amp (shades of surround sound), loudness compensation switch for low-level listening, switchable high frequency filter for scratched records and tape hiss, and a built-in low-frequency filter to minimize the amplifier power drain caused by turntable rumble. In house, they wound and utilized large and heavy power and output transformers. They were ahead of their time in design philosophy as well - a Scott engineer was quoted as saying "if it measures well but sounds bad, it IS bad. If it measures badly but sounds good, then you have measured the wrong thing." I hooked up an early 1960's Scott 222c to Rogers LS 3/5a's, and MAN, does this combo sing.
