Yohansebastian, please bear in mind that the H-Cat already had a Golden Ear award from TAS. This was a much earlier version.
I have two preamps, the P12A and the Exemplar Exception. There is little question that both have their strengths. My Exception is a combination of the original Exception but with the new Exception boards rather than the parafeed of the original Exception. I have had various Exemplar preamps for many years and have compared it with many other tube preamps. With the exception of the ss TAG preamp, I never could stand solid state preamps and the TAG had such high gain that I could not use it with my more sensitive amps.
My present Exception has a great sound stage and great dynamics. It has great body with vocalists sounding great and real. I have used it with many tube amps. With the exception of a brief use of the 47Labs 25 watt ss amp, I have used it with tube amps.
The H-Cat entered my system with great suspicion that it would sound edgy and dry. It did not. What I heard was very precise localization in the wide and deep sound stage. It did not have the body of the Exemplar but it sounded quite real.
I say all of this to suggest that you are right that "partnering equipment" can affect what you hear with the H-Cat. I have found that you can easily hear the benefits of a better digital and analog front end and cables. I use a Reimyo 300B amp and can find nothing that rivals it as long as 8 watts is enough. I have not tried the H-Cat amp but may do so. I have never heard or even seen the H2O amps, nor have I ever tried it with a ss amp. I do know several people who are using it with ss amps, however.
